Let’s take a look at the Evolution and Coexistence Lab led by Dr. Raquel F. Pereira Costa at YLC!

When we look at us humans—and, by extension, human society—we see that we have significant relationships with a wide variety of animals.

Pets, starting with dogs and cats, bring us comfort as members of our families. A visit to the zoo allows us to learn about the vastness and wonder of the world through many rare animals. Wild animals are also indispensable to the natural environment that surrounds us. Whether in captivity or in the wild, we maintain close relationships with various animals every day.

On the other hand, unintended encounters with wild animals can sometimes lead to injuries. We must also be cautious of zoonotic diseases. Furthermore, we must not forget that animals’ well-being requires our consideration as well. Animals, too, are subject to injury, illness, and severe stress, and we must not overlook the fact that many wild animal species have been driven to the brink of extinction.

What kind of relationship should we, as humans, have with animals?
Dr. Raquel F. Pereira Costa is conducting research on the benefits to humans and animal welfare, with the goal of fostering better interactions between humans and animals.
